Located between the Eduardo VII Park and the luxurious Avenida da Liberdade, the Marquês de Pombal Square is revealed as one of the most important historical squares in the city. It was Marquês de Pombal, the figure and monument in the center of the Rotunda, who planned and directed the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake that left Lisbon in ruins. The expansion of the city from Lisbon to the north in the 19th century shifted the center of Rossio to Marquês de Pombal Square. Therefore, in 1934, stands this wonderful monument to Marquês de Pombal. With his hand on a lion, as a symbol of power, he admires his masterpiece: Baixa Pombalina de Lisboa. This square has been the scene of countless ludic and political events since the beginning of the 20th century, such as the Proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. Today, known for the Rotunda of Marquês de Pombal, it is one of the main traffic connections to various areas of the city. In addition, with the Eduardo VII Park next to it, more green zones and specific walks were created for the pedestrians to circulate.
